The ASI certificate: what it is and when to apply for it

When people talk about classic cars in Italy, the letters ASI come up almost every time. They stand for Automotoclub Storico Italiano, the body that issues the certificates recognising a vehicle as being of historic and collector interest.

Which documents are we talking about

The most requested document is the Certificate of Historic Relevance (CRS), reserved for vehicles at least twenty years old that keep their original features. There is also the Identity Certificate, a more detailed document for owners who take part in events and rallies.

Why it can be worth it

The certificate attests to the car's state of preservation and supports its value over time. It also gives access to insurance policies designed for historic vehicles. Any reduction in Italian road tax, on the other hand, depends on regional rules and changes over time, so it is always worth checking at the time of purchase.

What to check before buying

  • If the certificate is already there, check that its details match the registration document.
  • If it is missing, consider how close the car is to its original specification: major modifications can make it hard to obtain.
  • Always ask for records of the work carried out.

For every car we offer, we can tell you whether it is already certified or meets the requirements. Write to us and we will reply with all the details.
