In the late seventies, turbocharging was a technology associated with racing. Saab had the idea of bringing it to a car for everyday use: the 99 Turbo arrived in 1978, followed by the 900 Turbo, which became one of the brand's icons.
A different idea of performance
The goal was not outright speed but generous mid-range pull, useful for overtaking and long journeys. Combined with seats designed for many hours at the wheel and a strong focus on safety, this approach gave Saabs a very recognisable character.
Why they are sought after today
Saab Automobile stopped production in the early 2010s, so the surviving cars are a finite heritage. The 900 Turbo, the 9000 and the first 9-3 Convertibles offer an affordable way into the world of youngtimers, with robust mechanics and a very active community of enthusiasts.
